# C04 Resources — Design Ideas & Evaluation Criteria **Criterion scope:** Ideation techniques (mood boards, brainstorming, mind maps, sketches), annotations, evaluation criteria for efficiency and effectiveness. --- ## C4-1: Design Ideas & Annotations ### Existing Materials (CriterionXX/) The Criterion04/ folder is reasonably well-stocked with step-by-step tasks (mood boards, brainstorming, mind mapping, design sketches) and Nelson textbook activities on ideation techniques. The gap is in **video/interactive content** — everything is text-based. ### External Resources | Resource | Source | Format | VCAA Mapping | Why It's Useful | |----------|--------|--------|--------------|-----------------| | [Miro — Free Brainstorming Tool](https://miro.com/brainstorming/) | Miro | Interactive (free tier) | Brainstorming, mind mapping, mood boards | Students can collaborate in real-time on digital brainstorming boards. Far more engaging than paper-based brainstorming. Supports mood boards, mind maps, and sticky-note brainstorming. | | [Milanote — Creative Techniques](https://milanote.com/product) | Milanote | Interactive (free tier) | Mood boards, brainstorming, visual design ideas | Purpose-built for mood boards and visual brainstorming. Better for visual/design-oriented students than text tools. | | [How to Use Mind Mapping for Better Thinking](https://www.designorate.com/how-to-use-mind-mapping/) | Designorate | Reading + visual examples | Mind mapping technique | Clear explanation with visual examples of mind mapping process. Good reference for students who haven't done mind maps before. | | [13 Productive Brainstorming Techniques](https://creately.com/guides/visual-brainstorming-techniques/) | Creately | Reading + visual guide | Brainstorming, divergent thinking | Covers multiple brainstorming techniques with visual examples. Helps students go beyond basic brainstorming into structured techniques. | | [UX Ideation Techniques](https://www.justinmind.com/ux-design/ideation-techniques) | Justinmind | Reading | Ideation techniques, design ideas, convergent/divergent thinking | Professional-grade overview of ideation techniques including SCAMPER, crazy 8s, brainwriting. Extends beyond the basic four techniques in the study design. | | [VCAA Advice for Teachers — Software Development](https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/curriculum/vce/vce-study-designs/computing/advice-for-teachers/Pages/Unit3SoftwareDevelopmentOverview.aspx) | VCAA | Reading | All C4 topics — official guidance | The authority. Teachers should read this to understand VCAA expectations for ideation and design ideas. | ### Gaps — C4-1 - **No good VCE-specific video on ideation techniques.** TSSM has a paid video series but no free VCE-targeted video walks through mood boards/brainstorming/mind maps in a software context. - **Mood boards for software** (not fashion/interior design) are under-represented online. Most mood board tutorials are for visual design disciplines. May need to create our own. - **Annotation examples** — difficult to find good examples of annotated software design sketches online. The Nelson textbook is the best source here. --- ## C4-2: Evaluation Criteria ### Existing Materials (CriterionXX/) Good coverage of evaluation concepts (efficiency-and-effectiveness-factors.md, evaluation templates, AI-assisted evaluation). The gap is in **concrete examples of evaluation matrices** and **video content explaining the concept**. ### External Resources | Resource | Source | Format | VCAA Mapping | Why It's Useful | |----------|--------|--------|--------------|-----------------| | [VCE Computing Key Terms Part 1 — Effectiveness vs Efficiency](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UMjbzj9LTI) | YouTube (MPT / MichaelPokeTeacher) (AU) | Video | Efficiency and effectiveness factors, evaluation criteria | AU teacher explains effectiveness vs efficiency as distinct VCE Computing concepts — the exact distinction the C4-2 evaluation matrix requires students to hold. Short and directly on-topic. | | [VCAA Teaching and Learning — Applied Computing](https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/curriculum/vce-curriculum/vce-study-designs/applied-computing/teaching-and-learning) | VCAA (AU) | Reading — official guidance | Design annotations, evaluation criteria, SRS requirements | Official VCAA advice for teachers: covers annotation requirements ("text notes that demonstrate … ability to use data visualisation software"), evaluation rubric construction, and linking criteria to SRS requirements. The authoritative source for rubric language. | | [Evaluation (OCR) — Isaac Computer Science](https://isaaccomputerscience.org/concepts/prog_cwk_evaluation_ocr) | Isaac CS (UK) | Concept page | Evaluation criteria, SRS-linked criteria, justification | UK A-level concept page covering: evaluate against success criteria from analysis, annotated evidence of usability testing, justifying usability features, discussing limitations. Maps well to VCE C4-2 evaluation structure. Requires free Isaac CS account (sign-up at isaaccomputerscience.org). | | [ATARNotes Forum — Efficiency and Effectiveness Criteria](https://archive.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=146265.0) | ATARNotes | Reading (forum discussion) | Evaluation criteria, efficiency, effectiveness | VCE-specific discussion of what counts as efficiency vs effectiveness criteria. Real student questions with community answers. | | [VCAA Assessment Page — Software Development](https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/curriculum/vce-curriculum/vce-study-designs/applied-computing-software-development/assessment) | VCAA | Reading | Evaluation criteria — official requirements | Official VCAA guidance on what the SAT assessment expects for evaluation criteria. The authority on what "develops and applies evaluation criteria" means. | | [Farrell's VCE Software Development — SAT Overview](https://farrellv0.wixsite.com/softwaredevelopment/sat) | Teacher resource (Wix site) | Reading | Design folio, evaluation criteria | Overview of SAT expectations including design folio and evaluation criteria. Useful for understanding context. | | [VCAA Sample Project Plan (Gantt Chart)](https://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/curriculum/vce/vce-study-designs/computing/advice-for-teachers-appliedcomputing/Pages/SampleProjectPlanGanttChartImageDescription.aspx) | VCAA | Visual example | Links evaluation criteria to project planning | Official VCAA example showing how evaluation connects to broader project methodology. | ### Wiki pages for C4-2 | Page | What it covers | |---|---| | [Evaluation vs Testing](/sd/C04/Evaluation%20vs%20Testing) | Why passing all tests does not mean passing evaluation; concrete worked example; the most common rubric mistakes at 5–6, 7–8, 9–10 (DRAFT) | | [Efficiency vs Effectiveness](/sd/C04/Efficiency%20vs%20Effectiveness) | Side-by-side scenario showing a fast-but-unusable app vs a slow-but-usable app; how each term maps to evaluation matrix factors; why the distinction matters at 7–10 (DRAFT) | | [Evaluation Criteria and the SRS](/sd/C04/Evaluation%20Criteria%20and%20the%20SRS) | Worked counter-example of floating vs SRS-anchored criteria; step-by-step derivation of a criterion from an SRS requirement; checklist for submission (DRAFT) | ### Gaps — C4-2 - **No video explaining efficiency vs effectiveness** in a VCE Software Development context. No verified external resource covers this cleanly; a 2-min side-by-side scenario video (fast app with wrong output vs slow correct app) would close it. Teacher-recorded. - **Evaluation matrix worked examples** — no external resource shows a complete filled-in matrix for a school software project. The Criterion04/ templates are the best available. A blank Markdown template (stripped of the travel-planner example) is the highest-priority teacher-created asset. - **Writing a justification paragraph** — no external resource walks through the design justification section step by step (score → SRS ID → decision). Teacher-recorded walkthrough needed. - **Annotating design sketches (video)** — no confirmed video walks through Excalidraw annotation from naming layer to functionality layer to justification. Teacher-recorded. - **AI disclosure log worked entry** — no external resource models a specific, checkpointable log entry. Teacher-recorded. - **Excalidraw mood-board starter template** — no `.excalidraw` file available from external sources. Teacher-created asset needed. --- ## Recommended Actions 1. **Blank evaluation matrix template** — strip the travel-planner example from C042-Evaluation-Template.md and publish as a blank Markdown/Typst file. Highest-priority asset. 2. **Teacher videos (in order of impact):** (a) efficiency vs effectiveness side-by-side scenarios (2 min); (b) annotating a design sketch in Excalidraw (3–4 min); (c) writing a justification paragraph (3 min); (d) AI disclosure log entry (2 min). 3. **Miro or Milanote** could be adopted as classroom tools for the ideation tasks — both have free tiers and are far more engaging than paper.
